If you're a fan of all things horse-related, then you're sure to enjoy any of these equine-themed movies...

Secretariat

This biographical film is based on the real-life race horse, Secretariat, who won the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing back in 1973. Diane Lane played the horse's owner, whilst John Malkovich was cast as the renowned trainer, Lucien Laurin. The film was based on the book, Secretariat: The Making of a Champion, by William Nack, who was also a consultant for the film.

The Horse Whisperer

This 1998 movie was directed by and starred, Robert Redford, alongside other Hollywood names such as Kristin Scott Thomas, Scarlett Johansson and Sam Neill. This movie's a classic, and perfect for watching on a lazy afternoon while you cook dinner or play Partypoker
. The basic plot follows the story of a horse trainer (played by Redford) who helps a teenage girl and her horse to recover following an accident.

National Velvet

This film is certainly an old classic, first having been released in 1944, and starring a young Elizabeth Taylor. Taylor plays a young girl by the name of Velvet Brown, who wins a horse in a raffle, and trains him to take part in the Grand National. The film won two Oscar awards - one for Anne Revere's performance as Best Supporting Actress, and another for Best Film Editing.

Buck

Buck is a 2011 documentary film which was directed by Cindy Meehl, and tells the story of real-life horse whisperer, Buck Brannaman. Brannaman travels to various ranches giving clinics on natural horsemanship. Robert Redford also features in this movie, having worked with Brannaman during The Horse Whisperer, where he was the lead equine consultant. The movie's fascinating story earned it the U.S. Documentary Competition Audience Award at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.
