How to Think Like A Horse: The Essential Handbook for Understanding Why Horses Do What They Do

Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage: Designing and Managing Your Equine Facilities

Inside The Box

Inside the Box

What you'll need

  • Four ground poles

Preparation

  • Place the four poles at right angles to each other so they form a square

Game

Riders ride into the box at a walk or trot. They must stop without touching any of the poles, then execute a complete circle (360 degrees) without touching any of the poles. The student then exits on the same side he/she entered the box.

Variations:

  • Complete two turns: one in each direction
  • Execute exercise without reins
  • Execute exercise without stirrups
  • Decrease the size of the box

Added Benefits:

This game works on the use of the rider's leg, as well as practicing the walk-to-halt and trot-to-halt transitions. It can be good for the horse as well, to listen to its rider better. The rider will learn to turn the horse in a small area, whether it by by a turn on the forehand or the haunches. They will learn to keep the horse from backing up or proceeding forward, but how to move the horse sideways. Good exercise for coordination on the part of the rider as well.
