How to Think Like A Horse: The Essential Handbook for Understanding Why Horses Do What They Do

Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage: Designing and Managing Your Equine Facilities

Whack A Cone

Whack-A-Cone

What you'll need

  • A lunge whip with the flicker end wrapped up and secured
  • Lots of small cones
  • A very, very patient, unflappable horse

Preparation

  • Place the cones all over the arena floor, at random intervals
  • Hand the lunge whip to the student

Game

Student knocks over all the cones with the lunge whip.

Variations:

  • Change hands to knock cones over
  • Change hands for knocking over every other cone
  • Stand to knock over cones
  • Stop before knocking over the cones
  • Walk/trot/canter and knock the cones over

Added Benefits:

Teaches the rider calmness around the horse, not wildly swinging the whip around, and teaches control at the different gaits, as well as steering skills (whoops, missed again!)
