The
Barthais Heavy Horse breed developed in the land of France, around
Barhais do l'Adour, which is how it got its name. Since its ancient
development as a breed in 732 AD, it has become lighter and smaller,
and become classified as a pony. They used to be a separate breed,
and heavier and taller. However, at some unknown point in history,
the Barthais and Landais breeds became one and the same. They are
normally used as riding horses and for pulling carts and carriages.
They are intelligent, but somewhat independent, and they can be
bay, brown, black, or chestnut.
Very little else is known about this
breed's past history.
