The Wurttemberger originated in Wurttemberger,
Germany in the 17th century at the Marbach stud. This state owned
stud is one of Germany's oldest founded in 1573. To develop the
Wurttembrerger, these breeders used the local stock and bred them
with Arabians. Friesian stallions, Barb and Spanish mares and Anglo-Norman
influence were also used at this time. In the mid-19th century a
Trakehner stallion was introduced to the Wurttemberger breed. This
Trakehner stallion was Julmond and he came to the Marbach stud in
1960. He is considered to be one of the present-day Wurttemberger's
greatest influences.
The Wurttemberger is a proportioned
riding horse and has immense athletic quality in show jumping and
conformation to compete at an international level successfully.
The Wurttemberger stands on average 16 hh, but can be larger. This
resilient horse is long lived and is inexpensive to keep. Today's
Wurttemberger is less stocky then the earlier version and has a
calm temperament. This horse is only bred in Germany.
