The Tibetan pony is found in Tibet and is probably descended
from ancient stock. They exhibits some similarities to the Mongolian pony and to other Chinese
breeds, but have remained largely pure for a good many years. These ponies are famous for their
incredible strength and endurance in relation to their small stature.
The Tibetan pony is held in high regard among the local
people and has traditionally always been kept by the wealthy Tibetans and by the famous Dalai
Lama, as well as by some of the local farmers. Tibetan ponies were often sent as gifts to the
Chinese Emperors, especially during the Tang and Ming dynasties. They are excellent workers and
are used for light draft, riding, and packing, and are very sure-footed. They are also very resilient
and energetic.
The Tibetan ponies' heads have a pronounced jaw line
with a straight profile and small ears and eyes. Their necks are muscular and short, with a deep
chest and straight shoulders. They have straight backs with flat withers and broad, powerful
hindquarters. Their legs are strong and straight with solid joints. The Tibetan pony can be found
in mostly bay or gray, although other colors are found. They stand approximately 12.2 hh.
