The Timor, a relatively primitive pony, is found on the
Island of Timor, Indonesia. The breed has probably developed from horses taken to the island from
India and then established their own characteristics.
The Timor pony breed plays an important role on the island
and is used for everything from riding, driving, light farm work, and working with cows. This
itty bitty pony shows remarkable strength and endurance and works with cattle really well. Characteristically
they tend to be quiet and biddable as well as strong, frugal, and quick on their feet. Large numbers
of Timor ponies have been exported to Australia, where they have played important parts in developing
the Australian pony.
The Timor exhibits a large and heavy head, too large
for their narrow frame, and have a short, muscular neck set on prominent withers. They have short
backs, a sloping croup, and a high-set tail. Their shoulders are often straight and the legs tough
with very hard feet. The Timor pony is usually brown, black, or bay, and they tend to stand between
10 and 12 hh, small even for a pony.
