Walking Race

Walking Race

What you'll need

  • At least two horses
  • At least two riders

Preparation

  • Make sure there is a straight path from one end of the arena to the other, with room for two horses walking side by side

Game

Students line up at one end of the arena, and walk their horses as fast as they can to the other end. Horse/rider are disqualified if they break gait.

Variations:

  • Weave through cones
  • Walk over poles
  • Do this at a trot or canter, or sidepass

Added Benefits:

This teaches the rider to extend the walk. By keeping the horse on the bit to prevent trotting, the horse is encouraged to use its hindquarters more to step under itself and extend the stride.
